Mountain biker charging up the Horse Gulch singletrack, eyes on the trail

Rivalries

Settle it on the course

Every town has its rivalries. The two grocery stores on the same street. Fire and police. The brewery up the road. Call yours out: they get 10% off to enter, you get 10% back when they do, and the course settles it.

2027 call-outs

The board

Every confirmed call-out, team and group names only. Challenge Sent is where a rival sits until both teams are entered. Challenge Accepted is where it is settled on the course. Want your name here? The deal and the form are below.

The rival deal

They save 10%. You get 10% back.

Call out a rival and we give you a code made for your team. Hand it to them. It takes 10% off their entry. Every rival team that enters with your code puts 10% of your entry fee back in your pocket. Ten rivals and your team races free.

For your rival

10% off their team entry, with the code you pass along. A little help getting them to the start line, so you can beat them there.

For your team

10% of your entry fee refunded for every rival team that enters with your code. It adds up: ten rivals covers your whole entry.

The fine print: rival codes come from us by email and are for team entries. One code per entry; it does not combine with other codes or offers, including the Veteran entry and the Founding Team code. Your 10% back is refunded to the card you paid with once each rival team has paid its entry, up to the full amount your team paid.

How a rivalry works

1 - Enter your team

Register as usual. Any team can call out a rival: a business, a club, a crew, a department, a school.

2 - Name your rival

Email us with the subject line Rival and tell us who you want to race. We send you a code made for your team. Pass it to your rival with the challenge. Rivalries work best when the call-out comes from you.

3 - They enter, you get 10% back

Your rival enters with your code and saves 10%. Once their entry is paid, we refund 10% of yours. Then both teams race the same course on the same day: Full against Full, Sprint against Sprint.

4 - The faster team wins the year

The official results decide it. The winner keeps the bragging rights until the rematch next year, and the rivalry goes up on this page.

Rivalries we want to see

Some of these write themselves. Pick the one that has been going on for years.

Grocery store against grocery store

Same customers, same parking lot traffic, one finish line.

Fire against police

The oldest rivalry in town, now with a kayak leg.

Brewery against brewery

Decide who buys the first round on the course, not at the bar.

Bike shop against bike shop

Plenty of opinions about the mountain bike leg. Time to back them up.

School against school

Staff, faculty, coaches and parents. The kids get to watch.

Office against office

Across the street, across the hall, or the floor upstairs.

Call out your rival

Name them. We take it from there.

Tell us who you are and who you want to beat. You confirm by email, then your rival gets the challenge and the deal in their inbox, and the call-out goes on the board. When they accept, we send their code and you are both racing.

Your side
Who you are calling out

You confirm by email before anything goes to your rival. Your rival gets one email from us with the challenge, the deal and an accept link, and nothing else unless they reply. The board shows team and group names only. Addresses are kept for 24 months to run the rivalry and are never added to a mailing list. See Privacy & Cookies.

Where it started

Valkyrie has asked teams to race their rivals since 2023. That year we invited Durango businesses to bring a company team and call out a business rival, and every team roster we sent out carried the same challenge: firefighters racing police, brewery against brewery, bike shop racing bike shop. In 2024 every registered team got its own rival code to pass along. The idea has not changed: race the people you most want to beat, and come back next year to do it again.

Questions

How do we get our 10% back?

Each time a rival team enters with your code and pays, we refund 10% of your team entry fee to the card you paid with. It stacks, up to the full amount you paid.

Can the code be combined with other offers?

No. One code per entry. The rival code does not combine with other codes or offers, including the Veteran entry and the Founding Team code.

What if our rival does not enter?

Then there is nothing to post yet, and nothing to refund. The challenge stands until they do. You can call out as many rivals as you like.

Can a rivalry be inside one company?

Yes. Department against department works, as long as each one is its own registered team.

Who do you want to beat?

Email info@valkyrierelay.com with the subject line Rival. Tell us your team, your rival, and which course. We send your code back, usually the same day.
