The Valkyrie Relay is a seven-discipline team relay: trail run, mountain bike, stand-up paddle, open-water swim, road cycle, river paddle and road run, covered by one team across a single day in the San Juan Mountains. Registration for 2027 is open.

Registration is team-based.
One captain registers the team and holds the entry - the captain’s entry covers the whole team, and teammates join at no charge. Roster deadlines, and how to change a line-up later, are on the Update Rosters page.
Across the day your team covers all seven disciplines: trail run, mountain bike, stand-up paddle, open-water swim, road cycle, river paddle and road run.
Teams are two to nine racers. Two or three racers can enter as an Ultra Team, and one athlete can race the whole course alone on a Solo Entry. Teams race in Open, Women and Mixed classes, can compete in one Challenge - Corporate, Family, Service, Home Team or Club - and Masters 40+ teams get their own recognition.

What a team entry costs
One entry covers the whole team of two to nine, however you split the legs between you. Teams that enter as Founders keep a permanent place on the Founders page. After the Founders entry closes, Team Entry continues at the dated prices below.

We do not move a price without telling you first. Every rise is dated below, and the Founders entry closes when its places are taken or on December 31, 2026, whichever comes first.
What an Ultra Team entry costs
Two or three racers split the relay, on the Full or the Sprint Course; teammates join free, and every racer is 18 or over. Teams over three move to Team Entry and pay the difference. The Founders price runs through December 31, 2026, then the dated prices below.

What a solo entry costs
One athlete, the whole course, alone. Solo racers who enter by December 31, 2026 are Founding Ultras and keep a permanent place on the Founders page. From January 1, 2027 the price is $595 and stays there until entries close.

Payment plans: any entry over $500 can be paid 40% at checkout and the rest in three equal payments on May 1, June 1 and July 1, 2027, with no fee. Choose the plan at checkout through April 30, 2027; for a Solo Entry it is available from January 1, 2027.
What a Sprint team entry costs
The Sprint Course takes the same team of two to nine racers across shorter legs, and it costs the same as the Full Course. It takes the same team to keep you safe on the water: same lake, same river, same rescue coverage, same medical crew, same timing, same day. The course is shorter - the event around it is identical. Same prices and dates as the Full Course: Founders $695 until its places are taken or December 31, 2026; Team Entry $995 today, $1,195 from February 1, $1,295 from April 1 and $1,395 from June 21, 2027; Ultra Team $695 through December 31, then $945 from January 1, $1,045 from April 1 and $1,145 from June 21.
What a Sprint solo entry costs
One athlete, the whole Sprint Course, alone, at the same price as the Full Course. The distance is shorter; the water safety, medical cover and timing standing behind you are exactly the same. Same prices and dates as the Full Course: $495 through December 31, 2026, then $595 from January 1, 2027.
What your entry includes
One entry for the whole team, with teammates joining at no charge. Results published on this site. For Founding entries, a permanent place on the Founders page. The price shown is the only amount you pay, and every roster change up to the deadlines is free. What racers receive on race weekend is published here as each item is confirmed.

How registration works
From the list to the start line
Register as captain and hold your team's entry
One person enters the team and pays the entry - that single entry covers the whole team, however you later split the seven legs between you.
Teammates join at no charge
Your captain shares the team from Team Center and each racer joins on the Team Member entry, free, completing their own details and signing their own waiver.
Complete your roster and leg assignments
Add your racers, then set who covers which of the seven disciplines. Both are free to change until the roster deadline of Friday, August 27, 2027.
Change anything that needs changing
Swap a racer at no charge right up to packet pickup, change legs and team name until the roster deadline, and do almost all of it yourselves - the Update Rosters page walks through each case.

Home Team Challenge
Racing for the home crowd?
Enter the Valkyrie Relay. Compete in the Home Team Challenge — a standing of its own for teams racing out of the Durango area, with its own recognition on the results board.
This race runs through your streets, your trails and your river. The Home Team Challenge exists so that finishing first among the teams who call this place home counts for something on its own terms.
Home Team teams register through the same process, on the same dates, at the same entry price as every other team. The Challenge is a competition category, not an entry type and not a discount.
Your team qualifies when at least four of the seven legs are covered by racers who live, work or attend school in La Plata County. A team competes in one Challenge only - if you qualify for more than one, you choose. There is no separate entry and no extra fee.

We are developing an optional credit for teams that provide two approved event volunteers. The opportunity would be available to every team - not only local teams - and would be issued after the required shifts are completed and verified.

Changing your roster
Rosters change. Someone gets injured, someone else steps in, and the legs get shuffled the week before the race. Almost all of it you can do yourselves without waiting on us: swapping a teammate in is free and unlimited right up to packet pickup, and team name, roster and leg changes are free until the roster deadline of Friday, August 27, 2027.

Where each policy stands today. The one still being finalised is marked; everything else is settled, and the full conditions of entry are in the terms.
Roster changes
A team may change its name, add or remove roster members, and change leg assignments at no charge until the roster deadline of Friday, August 27, 2027. After that the roster is locked for timing, bib production and results, and changes are handled as substitutions.
Substitutions
A team may substitute one person for another at no charge and without limit, up to and including packet pickup. Every substitute completes their own registration and accepts the waiver before starting.
Transfers
A paid entry may be transferred to another person until Wednesday, September 15, 2027 at no charge. A teammate entry that carried no charge transfers at no cost. Moving to a different category is free until Wednesday, September 15, 2027, subject to space in the receiving category - email us and we move you, and if the new category costs more you pay the difference. With the platform fee absorbed and transfers free, the price on this page is the only amount you pay for your entry.
Refunds and deferrals
Withdraw by Tuesday, July 20, 2027 and you receive a deferral credit for the full amount paid, valid for the next edition and transferable once. Cash refunds are not provided. The full summary is below, and the complete conditions are in the terms.
Waitlist
If entries fill, a waitlist is how any spot that opens back up gets offered. How those offers are made is published if a waitlist opens.
Waivers
Every racer signs a waiver in their own name. A parent or guardian signs for any racer under 18.
Minimum ages
Minimum ages, by leg. Trail run and road run: 12. Mountain bike and road cycle: 14. Stand-up paddleboard, open-water swim and river paddle: 16. Ultra Team: 18. Solo Entry (the Ultra Heptathlon category): 18. Any team with an athlete under 18 must have a captain who is 18 or over, and each athlete under 18 needs guardian consent and a named supervising adult present for their leg. Ages are as at race day. These ages are under review by our counsel and insurer; if they change, every registered captain will be told directly.
Required equipment
The water legs carry mandatory safety equipment: a US Coast Guard approved Type 3 or Type 5 flotation device for river paddle and stand-up paddle racers, and a leash tethering SUP racers to their board. Flotation aids and snorkels are not permitted on the swim. The full list is published with the race rules.
When registration closes
Registration closes July 20, 2027 - 60 days before race day. Headcount for insurance, permits, safety coverage and supplies locks on that date, which is why entries close ahead of the event rather than at the start line.

We know you are committing real money to a race that was cancelled last year. Here is exactly how we handle it, in plain terms.
WHAT YOU PAY
The price you see is the price you pay, and it is the only amount you will ever be charged. We cover the registration platform's fee ourselves, nothing is added at checkout, and every change to your registration below is free.
SWAPPING SOMEONE IN
Free, any number of times, right up to packet pickup. Your teammate just needs to register and sign the waiver.
CHANGING YOUR TEAM NAME OR ROSTER
Free until the roster deadline, Friday August 27, 2027.
GIVING YOUR ENTRY TO SOMEONE ELSE
Free, until Wednesday September 15, 2027.
MOVING TO A DIFFERENT CATEGORY
Free, until Wednesday September 15, 2027, if there is space. You pay the difference if the new category costs more.
IF YOU PULL OUT
You get a credit for everything you paid, good for next year's race, and you can hand that credit to someone else once. You need to tell us by Tuesday July 20, 2027 - after that our costs are already committed and we cannot issue a credit.
IF WE CANCEL BECAUSE WE CHOSE TO
You automatically get a full credit for next year. You do not need to ask, and it costs you nothing.
IF WE ARE SHUT DOWN BY WEATHER, FIRE, WATER CONDITIONS OR AN AGENCY
We will give you a full credit for next year wherever we can, and if we cannot, we will tell you plainly why.
CASH REFUNDS
We do not give cash refunds. Everything above is a credit toward the next race.
PAYMENT PLANS
Plans can be chosen at checkout during the published availability window, and there is no fee for using one. If a payment fails we will let you know and try again. If it stays unpaid we may pause your entry, and after 30 days we may cancel it and turn what you have paid into a credit for next year, less a $25 admin fee. You can always pay the balance off early.
WHY NO CASH BACK?
By the time we would be handing money back, most of it is already spent on permits, insurance, timing, medical cover and course materials. A credit is the honest version of what we can actually do, and it is what we did in 2026 - everyone who was registered was moved to the next race at no charge.

How do I enter?
Registration runs on ACTIVE. One captain registers the team and pays the entry; teammates then join at no charge. Use the Register your team button at the top or bottom of this page - it opens the ACTIVE entry form for this race.
How many people are on a team?
Team Entry is two to nine racers. Two or three racers can enter as an Ultra Team instead, and one athlete can race the whole course alone on a Solo Entry. The entry price is per team, not per racer - the captain's entry covers everyone, and a bigger team simply splits the cost further.
Can I race it on my own?
Yes. The Solo Entry, listed under Ultra Heptathlon at checkout, is one athlete, the whole course, alone. Solo racers must be at least 18. Solo pricing is published on this page, and solo racers who enter by December 31, 2026 become Founding Ultras.
What is an Ultra Team?
Two or three racers splitting the relay between them, on the Full or the Sprint Course. Every racer is 18 or over, teammates join free, and a team that grows past three moves to Team Entry and pays the difference. Ultra Team pricing is on this page.
Is there a payment plan?
Yes, on any entry over $500. Pay 40% at checkout and the rest in three equal payments on May 1, June 1 and July 1, 2027, with no fee. Choose it at checkout through April 30, 2027; for a Solo Entry the plan is available from January 1, 2027.
Why does the Sprint Course cost the same as the Full Course?
Because it takes the same team to keep you safe on the water. Same lake, same river, same rescue coverage, same medical crew, same timing, same day - a Sprint entry costs us the same to run as a Full one. The Sprint Course is shorter, and the event around it is identical. It exists so more people can race the format, not as a cheaper way in.
Can I register before I have a full team?
Yes - one captain registers and holds the entry, and teammates join at no charge afterward. Your team can change its name, add or remove roster members and change leg assignments at no charge until the roster deadline of Friday, August 27, 2027.
What if I don't have a team yet?
Not yet? Post on the Community Board - racers looking for teams and teams looking for racers find each other there, and it is open now. Joining a team your captain has already registered? Your captain's entry covers you.
What platform does registration run on?
Registration runs on ACTIVE (ACTIVEWorks Endurance). Your entry, your roster and your leg answers all live there, and you manage them from MyEvents afterwards - see the Update Rosters page.
Is anything added at checkout?
No. The price you see is the price you pay. Valkyrie covers the registration platform's participant service fee itself, so no service fee, processing fee or surcharge is added at checkout or afterwards. Nothing else applies to your entry - transfers and course changes are free as well. The full conditions are in the terms.
Can I get a refund?
Cash refunds are not provided. If you withdraw, tell us by Tuesday, July 20, 2027 and you receive a deferral credit for the full amount paid, valid for the next edition and transferable once to someone else. After that date costs are committed and no credit is issued. If Valkyrie cancels the event by its own choice, every affected entry gets a full deferral credit automatically. The full conditions are in the terms.
What if someone on our team drops out?
Swap them out. A team may substitute one person for another at no charge and without limit, right up to and including packet pickup - the substitute just registers and signs the waiver. Substitutions made after the roster deadline may not appear in published results or on pre-printed materials.
Can we hand our entry to another team?
A paid entry may be transferred to another person until Wednesday, September 15, 2027 at no charge. A teammate entry that carried no charge transfers at no cost. Transfers are not available after that date.
Can we switch between the Full Course and the Sprint Course?
Yes. Email info@valkyrierelay.com with your team name and the course you want, and we move you at no charge until Wednesday, September 15, 2027, if there is space in the course you are moving to. Both courses are the same price, so there is nothing to pay either way.
Who decides which racer takes which leg?
Your team does. Leg assignments are made by the team rather than fixed at signup, and can be changed at no charge until the roster deadline of Friday, August 27, 2027.
Is there a discount for local teams?
All teams register at the same entry price. Eligible Durango-area teams can also compete for dedicated Home Team Challenge recognition and standings.
How do we qualify for the Home Team Challenge?

Team Entry is $995 today, $1,195 from February 1, $1,295 from April 1 and $1,395 from June 21, 2027; Ultra Team and Solo Entry follow their own dated steps above. Registration closes July 20, 2027. The Founders entry is different: it closes when its places are taken or on December 31, 2026, whichever comes first.
