Durango / Heber Valley
Two race towns worth the trip: Durango, where the Animas River runs through downtown below the mesas, and Utah’s Heber Valley, where Valkyrie began under the Wasatch peaks.
Before Dawn
Headlamps on. Race day starts in the dark at the arch, with the whole field watching.
Trail Run
Dirt, rock and singletrack, with the valley opening up below.
Mountain Bike
Climbs, ladder bridges and fast lines through the pines.
Stand-Up Paddleboard
Flat water on Lake Nighthorse, a long way to the buoy, and a run up the beach.
Open-Water Swim
Caps on, eyes on the buoys, and a splash out to the handoff.
Road Cycling
Sweeping mountain roads, long climbs and the valley below.
River Paddle
The Animas River: whitewater, wave trains and the takeout.
Road Run
Long curves, big views and the finish line at the end of the road.
The Exchanges
Where one leg hands to the next: staging areas, timing chips and the sprint between.
Wingmates & Volunteers
Support crews, water safety and the volunteers who keep race day moving.
The Crowd
Signs, cheers and phones in the air along the water, the trails and the finish.
The Finish
Arms up, medals on, and the whole team together at the backdrop.
The Bivouac & Awards
Music, partners, dancing and the winged trophy. Nobody leaves early.
The Utah Years
Valkyrie began in Utah’s Heber Valley — the Wasatch Back editions of 2021 and 2022, raced out of Soldier Hollow across the same seven disciplines.
Photography
Photographs and film from previous Valkyrie Relay races, including stills taken from race-day video. Race photos by Shawn Snow; Wasatch Back 2021 photos by Ben Haslam.
