The seven legs

Seven legs. One team clock. Durango, Colorado, on Saturday, September 18, 2027. Your legs are numbered 1 to 7, Trail Run through Road Run, and your team hands the clock on at every exchange. Pick the Full or the Sprint: both use the same seven legs, and a few hand-offs work differently on each, so every leg page tells you what changes. Your team carries two bracelets. The timing bracelet goes with the Trail Run, Mountain Bike, Road Cycling, River Paddle and Road Run. The lake bracelet is used only by your paddleboarder and your swimmer. On the Full, the road cycle runs alongside the paddleboard and the swim. Each leg page covers how the leg works, what to bring, how the hand-off goes and the rules that apply. Route plates and distances are on the maps page: /events/durango/maps. Exchange locations and parking are on the exchanges page: /events/durango/exchanges.

Leg 1

Trail Run

Leg 1. Your team's day starts here. Run the marked trail course and hand the timing bracelet to your mountain biker.

Full vs Sprint: Each course has its own trail route. See both on the maps page.

Leg 2

Mountain Bike

Leg 2. Ride the marked mountain bike course and hand the timing bracelet to your road cyclist.

Full vs Sprint: Each course has its own mountain bike route. The hand-offs work the same way on both.

Leg 3

Stand-Up Paddleboard

Leg 3. Your road cyclist tags you at the lake and you paddle out on the lake bracelet.

Full vs Sprint: Full: your road cyclist rides on right after the tag. Sprint: your road cyclist waits at the lake.

Leg 4

Open-Water Swim

Leg 4. Take the lake bracelet from your paddleboarder and swim the open-water course.

Full vs Sprint: Full: the swim finish ends the lake bracelet's day. Sprint: you tag your waiting road cyclist after the swim, on the clock.

Leg 5

Road Cycling

Leg 5. Ride to the lake, tag your paddleboarder, then ride the road course and hand the timing bracelet to your paddler.

Full vs Sprint: Full: you ride on straight away after the lake tag, alongside legs 3 and 4. Sprint: you wait at the lake for your swimmer's tag, then ride.

Leg 6

River Paddle

Leg 6. Take the timing bracelet with your boat still on shore, paddle the river and carry your boat out at the take-out.

Full vs Sprint: Works the same way on both courses: hand-off on shore, carry your boat out at the end.

Leg 7

Road Run

Leg 7. Bring the timing bracelet home. Your team's clock stops when you cross the finish.

Getting between exchanges

The race does not move athletes between exchanges, so every team plans its own way around the course.

  • Athletes and their equipment must be present and ready at the exchange before the incoming athlete arrives.
  • A team member need be present only for their own leg and its exchanges. Whole-event presence is not required.
  • Wingmates may drive athletes and gear between exchanges, and may hold and stage gear in the exchange area, outside the hand-off box.
  • A Wingmate may not pace, shadow or accompany an athlete on course, and may assist only inside published support zones. A vehicle may not follow an athlete along an open roadway.
  • Craft and boards must be at staging for the tag-up, not already in the water.
  • Each team receives two transferable Vehicle Access and Parking Passes. A single passenger vehicle or light truck is recommended.
  • Each minor requires a named supervising adult present for the minor's leg and its exchanges.

Where to stay

Race weekend shares the town with the Autumn Arts Festival, which runs downtown from Friday evening through Sunday. Lodging fills early on a festival weekend, so book rooms as soon as your team commits.
